Join the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum and UNCG Special Collections and University Archives to celebrate Black History Month.
Come learn more about Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown and Palmer Memorial Institute. Founded by Dr. Brown in 1902, Palmer was one of the first elite Black boarding schools in the South. Open until 1971, Dr. Brown transformed the lives of more than 1,000 African American students. Dr. Brown was not only an educator, but a fervent supporter of suffrage, civil rights, and social justice.
See artifacts related to Dr. Brown and Palmer Memorial Institute, read speeches and letters of Dr. Brown's, and learn more about this incredible local history! The campus of Palmer Memorial Institute is now a North Carolina State Historic Site that interprets the life and legacy of Dr. Brown.
